The predecessor of the University of North Michigan was the merger of two schools. The Northern State Normal School, founded in 1899, and the Northern Michigan College, founded in 1955, merged to form what is now the University of North Michigan in 1964. This is also the first college in Michigan’s higher education system to achieve “universalization”.
